PSOA Newsletters 1945 and 91 - 95

In Sept 06, the PSel Branch will celebrate its 65th anniversary. This is also the 25th anniversary of the PSOA. In preparation for the big event, perhaps its appropriate to look back at our history.

In 1945, Maj Carver wrote a history of PSOs in the Canadian Army during WWII. It was published in parts as part of the original PSO newsletter during the war. You can see the table of contents and download the text here.

From a more recent era, here are some newsletters from 91 - 95. I will post more in the future. These are notable as they contain more than just a snapshot of the branch gossip.

It was the best of times and it was the worst of times. We had PSOs teaching in three Canadian Military Colleges but few PSOs were working in Recruiting. There were no Operational Psychology Advisors but we had a PSO in Cambodia and PSOs were starting to get involved in something called CISD. Enjoy.

The spring 91 issue marked the 10th anniversary of the PSOA.

In Fall 1992, see page 35 Reminiscences of a War Examiner Part 1. Maj (deceased) Arthur Wilkinson writes of his experiences as a PSO in WWII. On page 32, see a good description of the development of Psychological testing in the CF and on page 28 there is a description of the formation of the Australian Army Psychology Corps.

Note: These are pdf files. They should open automatically but they are large[1.5 megs] so be patient as they download[up to 5 min]. Alternatively, right click and select 'save target as', save to the desktop and then open by double clicking on the icon.

The spring 93 issue starts with a discussion of the Total Force concept and how the reserves were to be completely integrated with the Regular Force into a unified CF structure. On page 29, see an article on Flight Leader(Ret'd) Bryce Chase who was recruited into Personnel Selection by Buck Blair in 1949. On page 30, see part two of the War Examiner article.

On page 22 you can see a picture of the digital camera we just wrote off at the last AGM. Digital pictures in 92! Who says PSOs are not early adopters?
