Allister MacIntyre is honoured with IMTA Award * Allister MacIntyre est honoré par un prix de l’IMTA

I am very pleased to advise that Dr Allister MacIntyre, RMC, was the recipient of the Harry Greer Award at the International Military Testing Association (IMTA). It was supported by all 22 member nations. The award honours outstanding support to the IMTA organization, outstanding support to partner nations, as well as outstanding contributions to the field of research domestically and internationally and support to international research bodies. The Harry Greer award, created back in the 1960s, is not given each year and Allister is only the third Canadian since its inception to win the award. Allister was a PSO for almost 30 years before taking his retirement in 2006, at which time he joined the RMC faculty in the MPL Dept.  We are all very proud of Allister and happy to see him honoured in this manner.

Update from LCol Scholtz * Mise à jour du Lcol Scholtz

Hello All,

Happy New Year! We are keeping very busy here monitoring the clash between two tribes and assisting with the humanitarian needs. The advancing forces are approx 6000 strong, and are destroying everything in their path. I have attached an air photo that I took yesterday (hopefully it goes through – internet connection here not reliable). You should be able to see the soldiers and a burning village (from helicopter at approx 800m). Yesterday, escorted (by helicopter) the South Sudan Vice President to the area to try to stop the fighting but don’t think its going to help.

All the best for 2012!

Dave

LCol Scholtz deploys to Sudan * Lcol Scholtz déployé au Soudan

Another day at work in South Sudan!

Hope all is going well with you guys. I’m enjoying it so far. Will be coordinating and redeploying by helicopter with another platoon of government soldiers again today. Lots of rebel militia group activity in my area so very busy supporting the government forces trying to bring stability to the area.

All the best,

 Dave

Update from LCol Scholtz in Sudan * Mise à jour du Lcol Scholtz au Soudan

Hi Susan,

I hope all is well with you and DGMPRA. I am now in Juba, South Sudan (the new capital) and the mission UN HQ.  We have completed the admin and training and on Monday I will be flying by helicopter, a one hour ride North, to my team site in ‘Bor’, a village on the White Nile River (Bor means ‘wetlands’).  I am the only Cdn assigned to the sector/state of Jonglei, which is thousands of square kms. The main concern in the area is the instability resulting from inter-tribal conflicts as opposed to the threat of invasion from the north (Sudan), which is still happening along the border in some areas. Accordingly, our main goal is to stabilize the area so that the nation building can progress (food aid, medical facilities, police etc). As expected, very hot, dirty and poor. Generally the local population is friendly but for safety reasons we restrict our movement at night to vehicles only. In Juba there is rarely any power so hard to see anything at night anyways. In Bor, there is limited internet access and food so next week will bring new challenges. So far, and despite the frustrations with working in the UN,  all is going well.

Please pass on a Merry Christmas to all!

Dave
